Pukaki Air Lodge was opened in October 2018 by aviation enthusiasts, Grant and Mary Murdoch.

After spending 20 years restoring their beautiful 1966 Nanchang CJ6 (a Chinese military trainer built) they decided their 'chang' needed a new home.

The stars aligned when their 3 children left home and the ideal opportunity to build a lifestyle hangar on Pukaki Airfield arose.

The stunning views in Twizel and location was just too good to keep to themselves and with the aim of sharing their space their hangar project quickly became an accommodation project as well.

In addition to being the ideal spot for other aviation enthusiasts, Pukaki Air Lodge also is ideally positioned to  provide a bespoke experience for cyclists on the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail as well the tourists looking to experience this very special part of New Zealand.

Being located in the middle of an international dark sky reserve with little to no light pollution also ensures amazing vistas for the stargazing. Picturesque Aurora's, along with the milky way and the stunning sunrises and sunsets over the mountains make Pukaki Air Lodge a location not to be missed.

We have a cool Chinese CJ6 Nanchang flying machine that we spent 20 years restoring – so I guess that’s a bit different from the usual rose garden. Our plane is housed in the hangar which is part of the whole building. It is not separate, though well separated in terms of any noise. Our guests can view the planes in the hangar, and sit in the Nanchang. This is only available to guests who stay at Pukaki Air Lodge and is not available to the general public.
